With the development of modern technology, bentonite application has been transformed from traditional casting, pellet, drilling mud, adsorption agents to some high value-added products like nano materials, medicine, carrier materials and fine chemicals.Abstract A procedure based on electrical conductivity is described for measuring bentonite content in soil-bentonite mixtures having a wide range of bentonite contents. Swelling ability and behaviour of bentonite-based materials

The experimental results show that the salinity of the water has an influence on the swelling properties of compacted bentonite as the sodium (Na)-bentonite is partly transformed into calcium (Ca)-bentonite once the sodium chloride (NaCl) solution is replaced with a calcium dichloride (CaCl2) solution.Mineralogical data proved that the raw bentonite is mainly composed of smectite and illite with small quantities of gangue minerals such quartz, feldspars (orthoclase and albite) and calcite. The purified bentonite matches the mineralogical properties of Wyoming bentonite as an international standard clay (deposits of high economic value).Characterization and purification of Algerian natural bentonite
